We have not found a published single liveaboard trip that covers Bunaken, Lembeh, Wakatobi and the Togians. The longest relevant listings run about 12 days and name two of the four at most. That describes our sources and does not show it cannot be done. Two separate trips, north and southeast, is the plan published schedules support.

Is there a published trip covering all four?

Not one that we can point to. If a boat offers this routing on a private arrangement, or publishes it on a page we have not seen, we would like to read it, and you should ask for the dated itinerary. The absence matters because anyone selling this route should be able to show you the plan, day by day.

No source explains the gap. What the listings do show is that operators build each trip around one stretch of water, and that the regions differ in starting port and in the months operators choose.

Which combinations are published?

This table sets out what the sources show. The third column names only those of the four regions that the source itself names for that trip.

The one published Bunaken and Lembeh pairing we have read is Mikumba's sample, which also takes in Sangihe and Bangka, sold for November and December with no date on the page. Neptune's Bunaken guide adds a general remark, saying the better North Sulawesi crossings string Bunaken, Bangka and Lembeh together with Halmahera before heading south toward Sorong. That is an operator's description of a type of trip, and it is not a schedule, so ask for the dates and the site list of any crossing described this way. Our overview of which routes operators publish takes these one at a time.

Watch for names that imply more than they contain. The White Manta trip above carries "North Manado" in its title, and the Bunaken and Lembeh page shows what that title does and does not cover.

How far apart are the regions?

Bunaken and Lembeh are neighbours by Sulawesi standards. LiveAboard.com puts Bunaken Island about 30 to 45 minutes by boat from Manado, and Bitung, the harbour named by the Lembeh trips above, sits at the north-eastern edge of the island facing Lembeh Island. Neptune's guide places Bangka about an hour north of Lembeh by boat.

The Togians are a different matter. Wikipedia puts them near the centre of the Gulf of Tomini, between the Minahassa and East peninsulas, and Mermaid gives its out-and-back from Bitung 10 to 12 days.

Wakatobi is in the southeast, between the Banda Sea to the north-east and the Flores Sea to the south-west. Neptune's guide says boats there commonly start at Bau-Bau on Buton, about 100 km by overnight sail from the first reefs. Dancing Wind's trip from Bitung to Kendari reaches that side of the island, and its page does not name Wakatobi. This is why a Sulawesi liveaboard plan that wants both ends usually means two boats.

As a sense of scale for long crossings, Cruising Indonesia describes the Sorong to North Sulawesi passage as a 700 nautical mile journey, and White Manta gives its Raja Ampat, Halmahera and Lembeh crossings 10 to 12 days. Time spent under way is time you are not diving, and it adds up quickly on a route this size.

How would two separate trips work?

The published schedules point toward one northern trip and one southeastern trip. Our comparison of North or Southeast Sulawesi helps if you can afford only one of them. If you want both, plan them in this order:

  1. Fix the rarer trip first. Mermaid's Togian sailings fall in February, so build around those dates if the Togians are a priority.
  2. Choose the other leg. The dated Neptune trips above fall in August 2027 and in May and September 2028. Neptune's guide says Wakatobi trips run seven to eleven nights. It also names roughly March to May and September to November as the calm windows, so its season and Mermaid's do not overlap. In practice this may mean two holidays, not one.
  3. Add Bunaken from land if it is missing. Neptune's guide says a liveaboard is not required for Bunaken, and Bluewater says resorts work well for Lembeh, Bunaken and Wakatobi. Bluewater calls 12 to 15 nights a comfortable land-based pace across Bunaken, Bangka and Lembeh.
  4. Plan the gap for flights. A DAN-reported workshop recommended a minimum 18-hour surface interval before flying after multi-day repetitive diving, and longer after dives with compulsory decompression. Our page on flying after a Sulawesi liveaboard covers the timing. If both trips fall in one holiday, you will also need a working connection between Manado and Bau-Bau.
  5. Check the airports and the transfer. Sam Ratulangi International Airport (MDC) is 13 km north-east of Manado. Betoambari Airport (BUW) near Baubau and Matahora Airport (WNI) on Wangi-Wangi are domestic airports. Check current flights for the leg between them yourself before you pay a deposit. Wakatobi Dive Resort says its guest flight links Bali to its airstrip in under three hours, and its Pelagian yacht is tied to the resort, so ask whether that route is open to you.
  6. Leave a margin on the first boat day. Operators set their own cut-offs, as the guide to getting to the boat shows. A late connection on the way to your second trip could cost you the whole of it.

What should you question in a trip promising everything?

If someone offers all four regions on one sailing, you may be looking at something real that we have not seen, so test it before you dismiss it. These questions will show you what the trip actually is:

  • Can you send a dated, published itinerary with the sites named for each day?
  • How many dives are planned, and how many days are spent only sailing? Compare against published counts, such as 25 dives on Mermaid's 10-day trip and at least 33 on Wallacea's 12-day trip.
  • How long does the boat stay in each of the four regions?
  • Which stops are conditional on weather? Oceanic Society says so openly for its Togean stop, and any honest long route should do the same.
  • Which season does the trip sit in for each region, and what happens if one is rough?
  • Which park, port and fuel charges apply across all those regions, and are they in the fare?
  • How far is the boat from medical help at its most remote point?

A clear reply gives you a real trip to compare. A vague one suggests the plan may change after you have paid, and the published routes above are probably the safer basis for your plans. A request through the desk can lead to a contract with a company in our group, so test our offer as you would any other.

What other questions come up about combining these regions?

Can I do Bunaken and Lembeh on one liveaboard?

Possibly, but check the site list. Mikumba Diving publishes a 10-day sample naming both, and one operator guide describes crossings that link them; we have read no dated departure naming both. Ask the operator for dated departures and a site list.

Can I combine Lembeh and the Togians on one boat?

Yes. Mermaid lists exactly this as a round trip from Bitung, with sailings in February of 2027, 2028 and 2029.

Is Wakatobi reachable on a trip from North Sulawesi?

Not on a published sailing here. The Wakatobi trips listed start from Bau-Bau or Alor, so plan on a separate trip with its own flights.

How long would a holiday covering all four take?

No reliable total exists. It depends on two separate boats, on the flights between them and on season, and the dated trips listed do not fall in the same month. Start from the dates and work outward.

Which two regions pair most easily?

Bunaken and Lembeh, going by distance. Both are in North Sulawesi, and Bluewater treats them with Bangka as one land-based trip. Lembeh and the Togians are the pair with dated boat departures.
