Published North Sulawesi trips leave from Bitung, reached by road from Manado's airport. One operator guide says Wakatobi boats commonly start at Bau-Bau on Buton. The Togians are reached by a boat from Bitung or overland through Gorontalo or Ampana. Choose flights by region, confirm the pier with your operator, and arrive early enough that one late flight does not cost you the trip.
Transfer planning is regional, because Sulawesi's dive areas have little in common beyond the name. The sections below follow the journey in order. Airline schedules and operator arrangements change, and the operator's joining instructions outrank anything written here. If you have not chosen a region, the Sulawesi liveaboard guide compares them first.
Which airport serves each region?
Sulawesi.com names Makassar and Manado as the island's two international gateways. For liveaboard guests, Manado does most of the work in the north, and the south-east depends on domestic flights. The table lists what the sources name.
| Where the boat or stay is | Airport | Next leg | Named by |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Sulawesi trips from Bitung | Sam Ratulangi International (MDC), 13 km north-east of Manado | Road to Bitung | Wikipedia; operator pages |
| Sangihe Islands | Naha Airport, the group's only airport | Not needed for La Galigo's published trip, which embarks and disembarks at Bitung harbour | Wikipedia; La Galigo |
| Wakatobi trips from Bau-Bau | Betoambari (BUW), a domestic airport near Baubau on Buton | Boat from Bau-Bau | Wikipedia; Neptune Liveaboards |
| Wangi-Wangi and the Wakatobi regency | Matahora (WNI), a domestic airport and the regency's main gateway | Local transfer; ask the operator | Wikipedia |
| Togians, overland | Palu, Gorontalo or Luwuk | Overland to Ampana or Gorontalo, then ferry, speedboat or chartered boat | Wikipedia |
| Crossings from West Papua | Sorong end of the route; ask the operator which flights fit | One-way voyage to Tandurusa Port, Bitung | White Manta |
White Manta lists direct Scoot flights between Singapore and Manado, which is useful if your long-haul route passes through Singapore. Airline timetables change, so confirm that link when you book. Domestic fares are for the airline to quote on your own dates; look at the fare together with the night you may need before the boat.
A one-way trip needs two separate airports. White Manta's crossings run between Sorong and Tandurusa Port. Oceanic Society lists an expedition from Ternate to Gorontalo in June 2027 and the reverse direction in November 2028. Our page on departure ports lists which operators start where.
How long is the road from Manado airport to Bitung?
Two operators publish two different times. Mermaid's figure is approximately 1.5 hours by car from Manado airport to Bitung harbour. White Manta's is 1 hour from the airport to Tandurusa Port. These are the operators' own estimates for their own pickups, and neither is an official figure. Use the longer one for planning until your operator tells you otherwise, and remember that the clock starts when you leave the terminal, after immigration and baggage. If the pickup is shared with other guests, ask whether it waits for their flights too.
What changes if you add land days before or after the boat?
The transfer stops being one journey and becomes several short ones, each with its own published time. Bunaken Island is about 30 to 45 minutes by boat from Manado, according to LiveAboard.com. Sulawesi.com says Bangka Island is reached by boat from Likupang, and Neptune Liveaboards places Bangka about an hour north by boat from Lembeh. Those figures are useful for sketching a land stay. They come from separate sources, so check any door-to-door plan with the place you will be staying.
The order matters more than the distance. Put a hotel night or land diving before the boat if you want protection against a late flight, since you are already in the area when embarkation comes round. Put it after the boat if you would like to sit out the wait before flying on land. Either way, tell the operator where to collect you, because a pickup from the airport and a pickup from a hotel are different requests.
One small purchase helps: a local SIM card, so a driver or dive manager can reach you on the day. White Manta names Telkomsel as the best local card, and it warns that coverage fades soon after the boat sails, so make your calls before then.
Do operators include the transfer?
Sometimes, and few pages say. Mikumba Diving lists pick-up from the airport or a hotel in its package and excludes pick-up from other areas; we have not read the same statement from the other boats here, so ask yours. Read the operator's inclusions list and get the answer in writing. These questions settle most of it:
- Is airport pickup part of the fare, and is it included on both embarkation and disembarkation days?
- Does it run at fixed times, or does it meet any flight?
- Where do you meet the driver, and who do you call if your flight is late?
- Does pickup cover a hotel in Manado or Bitung if you arrive the day before?
- Which pier does the boat use on your date?
Budget a hotel night in Manado or Bitung using a current booking, not an old forum post.
How do you reach Bau-Bau or Wangi-Wangi?
By domestic flight, so an international arrival needs a connection somewhere else in Indonesia. Neptune Liveaboards says Wakatobi boats commonly start at Bau-Bau on Buton, about 100 km by overnight sail from the first reefs. Wikipedia places Betoambari Airport near Baubau and Matahora Airport on Wangi-Wangi. The two spellings, Bau-Bau and Baubau, refer to the same town, and you will see both on tickets and in itineraries.
Check the embarkation town before you buy a flight, since the two airports serve different islands. Wakatobi Dive Resort describes a guest flight of under three hours between Bali and its airstrip, generally on a Monday and Friday schedule. That is the resort's own arrangement. Ask whether it applies to your trip before you plan around it.
How do you reach the Togians without a boat from Bitung?
You combine a flight, a road and a sea crossing. Wikipedia describes the access as an airport such as Palu, Gorontalo or Luwuk, then overland to Ampana or Gorontalo, then a ferry, speedboat or chartered boat. Guests on a trip that starts at Bitung can skip all of it, since the boat makes the passage itself. The public sailing days, crossing times and season problems are covered in our comparison of the Gorontalo ferry and a boat trip.
How much buffer should you allow?
Enough that one delayed flight does not end the trip. Published limits are few, and each applies only to the operator that states it:
| Situation | What the source says | What it means for your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound flight is late | La Galigo says it generally cannot delay departure past 11am if a guest misses a flight | Treat this as a hard limit on that boat, and ask your own operator for its cut-off |
| Flight home on disembarkation day | White Manta advises a flight no earlier than 9am on return day | Check it separately against the no-fly interval |
| Leaving the Togians by public route | Asik Travel advises at least one spare day, ideally two, between the last island night and an onward flight | Book the onward flight only after allowing for that margin |
| Boat start at Bau-Bau | We have not found a published cut-off | Ask for the last safe arrival time in writing |
Our own view, which is judgment and not a published rule: if your connection lands on the morning of embarkation and an earlier option exists, take the earlier one and sleep near the port. A night in a hotel is a smaller problem than watching a departure go without you, and a boat that has sailed may not be easy to catch up with.
On the way home there are two separate clocks. One is logistics: the road back to the airport and the check-in time. The other is your body: how long to wait after the last dive before boarding a plane. The second often decides your flight, and our guide to flying after a liveaboard gives the published guidance. Plan your outbound flight from whichever clock ends later.
What other questions come up about getting to the boat?
Which airport should I fly into for a boat leaving from Bitung?
Sam Ratulangi International in Manado, code MDC. Wikipedia places it 13 km north-east of the city, and the road times operators quote to Bitung start there.
Is Makassar a useful gateway for a liveaboard?
Only as a connection, on the published trips here. Sulawesi.com names Makassar as one of the island's two international gateways, but none of the liveaboard departures listed on this site starts there.
Can I land on the morning the boat leaves?
Only if you accept the risk of missing it. La Galigo says it generally cannot hold departure past 11am for a guest who misses a flight, and other operators may set their own limits.
Do I need two different airports for a one-way trip?
Yes. A crossing ends far from where it began, as White Manta's voyages between Sorong and Tandurusa Port show. Book the flights separately and check each against the operator's published dates.
Does this site publish a transfer service?
No. This site publishes no transfer service, schedule or package. Your operator's joining instructions set the pickup, and the desk can answer questions about what the published sources say.

How do I reach the desk?
Write to the desk on WhatsApp at +62 811-3941-4563 or at bd@juaraholding.com. Tell us the region, your embarkation date and the flight you are considering. Dates and pickups on a specific trip are for that trip's operator to confirm in writing; we can point out what the published sources say about the connection you have in mind.
Send the desk your region, dates, and group size. The desk replies in writing.
