Mermaid's dated Togian dive trips leave from Bitung, and Mikumba's undated reverse sample starts on the Luwuk side, so the Gorontalo ferry mainly matters if you stay on land. A local guide reported KMP Tuna Tomini sailing from Gorontalo to Wakai on Tuesdays and Fridays at 16:00 in August 2025, a crossing of roughly 12 to 13 hours. Confirm the days before you rely on them.
The Togian Islands, also spelled Togean, lie near the centre of the Gulf of Tomini off Central Sulawesi, according to Wikipedia. Two very different journeys get you there, and they suit different travellers. This page compares them so you can rule one out.
Do you need the ferry to join a Togian boat trip?
No, on the trips we could confirm. Mermaid Liveaboards publishes its Lembeh, Togian and Lembeh trip as a round trip from Bitung, so you fly to Manado and never see a public ferry. Mikumba Diving publishes an undated 12-day sample between Lembeh and Luwuk in either direction, so its reverse version starts on the Luwuk side. Oceanic Society lists a snorkelling expedition from Ternate to Gorontalo in June 2027, with a Togean stop if weather permits, and the reverse direction in November 2028. Its guests start or finish at Gorontalo, and the expedition itself makes the sea passage.
LiveAboard.com counted 10 liveaboards for the Togian Islands in November 2026. That is a listing count and we have not checked each one's starting port, so ask before assuming. Our page on Togian liveaboard routes looks at what those trips cover.
So who needs the ferry? Anyone sleeping in an island lodge without a boat of their own has to cross somehow, and it is one published option. A diver who has already booked a cabin on a trip from Bitung has no reason to add it, and should be careful of any plan that does.
| What you are comparing | Boat trip from Bitung, per Mermaid | Public route from Gorontalo, per luwukbanggai.com |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Bitung, departing and returning there | Gorontalo, for Wakai |
| Time at sea to arrive | Part of the trip; you dive along the way | Overnight crossing of roughly 12 to 13 hours |
| Season as described | Mermaid says the Gulf of Tomini is not affected by the northeast monsoon from November to March | Small-boat crossings get cancelled from December to February |
| Where you sleep | On the boat | On land; some lodges close for part of January and February |
| How firm the schedule is | A published operator date, which the operator can still change | A timetable reported for August 2025 |
How does the public route work?
You reach a mainland port, then cross by sea. Per Wikipedia, you come in through an airport such as Palu, Gorontalo or Luwuk, continue overland to Ampana or Gorontalo, and finish by ferry, speedboat or chartered boat. In practice, that gives two main ports:
- Gorontalo to Wakai. The local guide at luwukbanggai.com reports that the KMP Tuna Tomini left on Tuesday and Friday at 16:00 in August 2025, an overnight crossing of roughly 12 to 13 hours.
- Ampana to Wakai. The same guide says public slow boats take 4 to 6 hours and a speedboat about 1.5 hours.
The August 2025 date is the important part of the first line. It is the latest timetable we have seen, and public sailing days change. This page prints no current timetable and no dated ferry fare. Ask a lodge you have already booked, since it depends on these boats itself.
Plan for cash as well. Asik Travel says there are no ATMs on the islands and that resorts are cash only. Bring what you need from the mainland, because a crossing that runs twice a week makes a missed withdrawal expensive in time.
How long does it take from Manado?
Most of a day by road before the ferry even leaves. The local guide puts Gorontalo about 9 hours by car from Manado, as of 2025. Add the crossing, and add whatever wait remains until the next sailing day, since a boat that runs on two days of the week may leave you several nights short of your plan if you miss it.
That is why the choice of airport matters more than the choice of boat. If you are staying on the islands and your flight options allow it, an airport closer to the port avoids that road, and Wikipedia lists Gorontalo itself among the access airports. Compare it with the alternative in our guide to airports and transfers by region, which also covers how much spare time to keep before your flight out. Check which flights link Manado and Gorontalo before you drop the road option.
When do crossings get cancelled?
The local guide says small-boat crossings get cancelled from December to February and that some lodges close for part of January and February. That statement is about public boats and lodges, not about liveaboards, and it does not say which vessels are affected on which dates.
It also sits awkwardly beside what operators say about the same water. Mermaid states that the Gulf of Tomini faces east and is not affected by the northeast monsoon from November to March, and it schedules its own Togian trips in February. LiveAboard.com favours the dry season for the Togians, roughly April through October. The sources do not line up neatly. A larger dive boat and a small public boat may have very different limits, and Mermaid has trips to sell in the months it describes.
If you plan a land stay during December to February, assume disruption and keep your plan flexible. If you are joining a boat trip in those months, ask the operator what its weather alternatives are.
What else is at Gorontalo?
For divers, Gorontalo is more interesting as a stop on the way than as a ferry port. Mermaid describes whale shark dives at Botubarani and walls at Olele Marine Park on the way to the Togians, and names Gorontalo and Bolaang Mongondow among the areas on that route. The local guide says whale shark sightings at Gorontalo are seasonal, without naming months, so do not book around that encounter without asking the operator directly.
That is one more point for the boat if whale sharks and Togian reefs are both on your list, since a trip that passes Gorontalo saves you from arranging each stage yourself. Either way, the ferry is the part of the journey to plan around, not a reason to choose Gorontalo.
What other questions come up about the Gorontalo crossing?
Is the Gorontalo ferry a sensible way to join a liveaboard?
Not usually. Mermaid's dated Togian trips start from Bitung, and Mikumba Diving's undated reverse sample starts on the Luwuk side, so the ferry adds a long overland leg and an overnight crossing that a boat guest does not need. It mainly matters if you stay on land.
Which days does the ferry sail?
A local guide reported Tuesday and Friday at 16:00 in August 2025. Treat those days as a dated report and confirm them with your lodge before you book anything around them.
Is there an airport at Gorontalo?
Yes. Wikipedia lists Gorontalo among the airports used to reach the Togians. Check current routes and fares with an airline for your own dates.
Is Ampana faster than Gorontalo?
On the water, yes. The same local guide gives Ampana to Wakai as 4 to 6 hours by public slow boat and about 1.5 hours by speedboat, against roughly 12 to 13 hours from Gorontalo. The road to each port is a separate question.
Should I travel this route in January?
Only with a flexible plan. The local guide says small-boat crossings get cancelled from December to February and some lodges close for part of January and February, though it does not name specific dates or vessels.
