Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Published fares are not our offers, and fees change.

Most published Sulawesi liveaboard trips listed here start or end at Bitung, where White Manta names Tandurusa Port, and not in Manado city. Crossings use Sorong in West Papua, or Ternate and Gorontalo on one snorkelling expedition. Southeast trips commonly start at Bau-Bau on Buton, according to an operator guide. Confirm the pier in writing before you buy a one-way flight.
Which ports do published trips use?
Listed by what operators publish, the map is shorter than the number of boats on a marketplace might suggest:
| Port | Trips that use it | Role | Airport named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitung, North Sulawesi | Mermaid Togian loop; La Galigo Bangka, Lembeh and Sangihe trip | Start and end | Sam Ratulangi (MDC), Manado |
| Tandurusa Port, Bitung | White Manta crossings, and the transfer it quotes for its Lembeh trip | End of crossings; arrival point for the Lembeh trip | Sam Ratulangi (MDC), Manado |
| Manado Harbour | Mikumba Diving Lembeh-to-Bunaken sample | End | Sam Ratulangi (MDC), Manado |
| Luwuk Harbour | Mikumba Lembeh-to-Luwuk sample; Wallacea Dive Cruise east coast itineraries | End, and the start of Mikumba's reverse trip | Luwuk (LUW) |
| Kendari | Dancing Wind Bitung to Kendari itinerary | End | Ask the operator |
| Sorong, West Papua | White Manta crossings; Wallacea Dive Cruise, 15 May 2028 | Start of crossings | Ask the operator |
| Ternate | Oceanic Society, June 2027 | Start, and the end of the reverse trip in 2028 | Ask the operator |
| Gorontalo | Oceanic Society, June 2027 | End, and the start of the reverse trip in 2028 | Gorontalo |
| Bau-Bau, Buton | Neptune Liveaboards King Neptune, 2028; common start for the region, by its guide | Start and end | Betoambari (BUW) |
| Alor | Neptune One, 28 August 2027 | Start | Ask the operator |
La Galigo's trip shows that a port can be a long way from the headline destination. Its route goes to Sangihe, an island group whose chief town is Tahuna and whose sole airport is Naha, according to Wikipedia, yet its page has guests embarking and disembarking at Bitung harbour. So check the port, and do not infer it from the region in a trip's name.
Explorer Ventures names its trip Lembeh, Halmahera and Lembeh, which implies a Lembeh-side start. The name alone does not identify the pier, so ask. The same goes for any boat absent from this table.
Is a Manado departure really from Manado?
Treat "Manado" in a trip name as a region or an airport until the operator names a pier. Mikumba's Lembeh-to-Bunaken sample is the exception we have read, ending at Manado Harbour, and LiveAboard.com says some boats set off from the seaport at Manado without naming them. Every other trip in our table with a named pier at this end of the island names Bitung, a road transfer away from the airport. White Manta's trip is the clearest example, called Lembeh and North Manado while its transfer runs to Tandurusa Port.
The geography explains the habit. Wikipedia places Sam Ratulangi airport 13 km north-east of Manado, and describes Bitung as sitting on the island's north-eastern edge, opposite Lembeh Island. Lembeh Strait separates Sulawesi from that island, with Bitung on its western side. Travellers land near Manado, and the boats on those pages board at Bitung, beside the strait.
The transfer time depends on who you ask, and the FAQ below gives both published figures. They describe slightly different end points, so plan on your own operator's number, and allow for traffic if your flight lands close to boarding time.
Ask too whether the transfer is part of the fare. Settle that before you land. Our guide to getting to a liveaboard covers the rest of the journey.
Which trips cross to Halmahera or Raja Ampat?
Three published products make this journey, and the direction matters more than it first appears:
- White Manta sells its Raja Ampat, Halmahera and Lembeh crossing at 10, 11 or 12 days, between Sorong in West Papua and Tandurusa Port.
- Wallacea Dive Cruise lists a Sorong to Bitung trip on 15 May 2028. The price table on this page shows its published fare.
- Oceanic Society runs Ternate to Gorontalo in June 2027 and Gorontalo to Ternate in November 2028, as a snorkelling expedition. Its fare is in the same table.
Cruising Indonesia puts the distance from Sorong to North Sulawesi at 700 nautical miles. Neptune's Bunaken guide also mentions crossings heading south from North Sulawesi toward Sorong, as a general picture rather than a schedule, so direction can go both ways. Check which way your date runs.
Explorer Ventures reaches Halmahera without being one-way: its 8-day trip goes from Lembeh and returns there. If you want Halmahera without the airport complication of a crossing, that format is the one to compare.
A link with Komodo is a different matter. No published trip here joins Sulawesi and Komodo. The nearest thing is Neptune One's Alor to Wakatobi trip, which approaches Sulawesi from the southern islands.
Which trips finish at Luwuk or Kendari?
Three operators describe trips that leave North Sulawesi and do not come back. Mikumba's 12-day, 11-night sample runs from Lembeh through Gorontalo and the Togians, reaching Luwuk Harbour around 3 to 4pm on the last day, with your flight home from Luwuk Airport (LUW). Mikumba says most guests connect through Jakarta, with Makassar as the regional hub. Its reverse trip starts at Luwuk and ends at Bitung. Wallacea Dive Cruise also ends its east coast itineraries at Luwuk, after two days at Tompotika.
Dancing Wind describes 11 days from Bitung to Kendari, with Banggai and the Saponda atolls in the last days. Its day notes put Lembeh about 10 hours' cruising from Bitung, which does not fit Wikipedia's placing of Bitung on the strait itself, so ask for the actual day plan. Neither Mikumba's nor Dancing Wind's page gave us a date. Do not buy the flight out of Luwuk or Kendari until the operator has confirmed the sailing and the pier, because a moved sailing would leave you holding a ticket from the wrong end of the island.
Where do Wakatobi trips begin?
Neptune's guide says boats commonly start at Bau-Bau on Buton, and that the first reefs lie about 100 km away, an overnight sail. Betoambari Airport sits near the town. On an 8-night trip such as King Neptune's, that sail takes the first night before anyone dives. Dive The World adds that trips occasionally leave from Alor or Flores and cross the Banda Sea to Wakatobi, without naming dates.
Neptune One arrives from Alor, so its first pier is nowhere near Buton; ask where it finishes, because our source gives the destination only as Wakatobi. And Wakatobi Dive Resort's yacht Pelagian cruises the archipelago and the southern shores of Buton, tied to the resort. No pier is listed for its embarkation, so ask the resort where you board.
For the wider decision about that region, see our comparison of North and Southeast Sulawesi.
How does a one-way trip change your flights?
A one-way trip means an open-jaw ticket or two separate bookings, and you will fly home from a different city than you arrived in. Our route table shows which trips do this, and the Sulawesi liveaboard guide shows how each region is reached. A few points need settling before you pay:
- Price the two airports together. Compare fare plus both flights against a round trip from one port. A crossing can look similar on fare and differ sharply once flights are in.
- Check arrival-day limits. Operators set their own cut-offs, and La Galigo's is on the guide linked above. Aim to arrive the day before if you can, particularly on a domestic connection.
- Check disembarkation-day limits. White Manta wants your return-day flight to leave at 9am or later; ask your own operator for its figure.
- Know what lies at the far end. White Manta lists direct Scoot flights between Singapore and Manado, though airline schedules change. A local guide's 2025 estimate is about 9 hours on the road between Gorontalo and Manado, so finishing at Gorontalo is a poor fit for a flight booked out of Manado.
- Leave room for the no-fly interval. The last dive sets the earliest safe flight, not the disembarkation time. See our page on flying after a liveaboard.
- Check your baggage across airlines. Dive gear on two carriers can meet two different allowances. Ask each airline, because rules vary.
Hold off on buying the far-end ticket until the operator has confirmed the date and the pier. Dates and ports on an operator's page can move, and a changed pier costs more on a one-way plan, when there is no return leg to fall back on.
Which published prices did we check?
Published fares, marketplace ranges and operator add-ons, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our offers. Fares and fees change, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What other questions come up about departure ports?
Do liveaboards leave from Manado city?
Rarely, on the pages linked here. Mikumba's Lembeh-to-Bunaken sample ends at Manado Harbour, and LiveAboard.com says some boats set off from the seaport at Manado. The other published trips at this end of Sulawesi name Bitung, including Tandurusa Port. Ask your operator to name the pier.
How long is the transfer from Manado airport to the boat?
It depends on the operator and pier. Mermaid's figure for Bitung harbour is approximately 1.5 hours, and White Manta's for Tandurusa Port is 1 hour. Use the time given by your own operator, and ask whether the transfer is included.
Does a Sangihe trip start in the Sangihe Islands?
Not on the published trip here. La Galigo's Bangka, Lembeh and Sangihe trip embarks and disembarks at Bitung harbour, even though the route goes far north toward the border with the Philippines. Check the boat you are considering.
Can I go from Raja Ampat to Sulawesi by liveaboard?
Yes, published crossings do this. White Manta and Wallacea Dive Cruise both list trips from Sorong that finish at Bitung. Check the date on the operator's schedule, because the direction can differ between departures.
Should I book my flights before the operator confirms the trip?
No. Wait until the operator has confirmed both the date and the pier in writing, and pick changeable fares where you can. A one-way trip leaves you more exposed if the plan moves.
