Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Published fares are not our offers, and fees change.
A Sulawesi liveaboard single supplement has no standard form: some boats price a solo guest separately, and no one method applies. White Manta's schedule adds 20% when one guest takes a cabin, Mermaid publishes a separate single-cabin fare on a named trip, and Oceanic Society lists a flat supplement for upgrades and limited single cabins. That is three operators, not a market rule, so ask about yours.
Do boats charge a single supplement?
White Manta, Mermaid and Oceanic Society do, in one form or another, and Neptune prints a separate single-cabin figure. Other boats sailing Sulawesi may do something else. Fares in the price table are quoted per person, so a guest alone in a cabin has to be priced some other way.
Boat size sharpens the question. Wakatobi Dive Resort says Pelagian is dropping from ten guests in five cabins to six in three ahead of 2027. On a boat with three cabins, one guest alone takes a third of the cabins, and the resort's price row does not say how Pelagian prices that. Oceanic Society describes its single cabins as limited on a trip capped at 12 guests. If you need your own cabin, ask early, and ask whether that cabin exists on your sailing at all.
How do the published approaches differ?
They differ in kind, not just amount, which is why a straight comparison of figures misleads. The three published amounts sit in this page's price table.
| Operator and trip | Approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| White Manta, schedule page | Percentage: 20% added for single occupancy | Whether the 20% applies to the fare alone or also to fuel and park charges |
| Mermaid I, Lembeh, Togian and back, 16 to 27 February 2027 | Separate fare: single listed beside lower deck, deluxe and master cabins | Which cabin the single actually is, and how it compares with a shared cabin you would accept |
| King Neptune, Bau-Bau round trip, 8 nights, May and September 2028 | Separate fare: shared and single cabin figures | What each figure covers (see below) |
| Oceanic Society, Halmahera to Sulawesi, 12 days, June 2027 | Flat amount: one supplement for upgrades and limited single cabins | Whether a true single cabin is still available, since the same line also covers upgrades |
Each method behaves differently as the fare moves. A percentage grows with the fare, so a pricier cabin or a longer trip costs more to occupy alone. A flat amount stays put, so it weighs more heavily on a shorter or lower-fare sailing. A separate single fare leaves you to work out the difference against whichever shared cabin you would otherwise take. The right comparison is therefore the total you would pay for the same boat on the same date, alone and sharing.
One published line needs a caution. Neptune's page prints the King Neptune single-cabin figure below the shared one. We show it as printed and base no advice on it, so check the units on Neptune's page before you use either number.
Avoid ranking these trips against one another. They differ in length, year and currency, and one is a snorkelling expedition. Our Sulawesi liveaboard cost page sets the fares in context.
Can you share a cabin instead?
Possibly, though we have seen no pairing rule from these operators. A King Neptune line quoted as "shared" tells you what sharing costs, not whether the boat will find you a cabin-mate. Put the question directly, and get the answers in writing before you pay:
- Will you pair me with another solo guest, and on what basis?
- If no one else books, do I pay the single rate, and from what date can that be applied?
- Can I name a shared cabin type and hold that price while you look?
- If my cabin-mate cancels, does the charge fall on me?
The second question has a timing edge. Balance dates arrive weeks before departure, and a late switch to a single rate could land after that point. The deposit and cancellation guide sets out those dates for the two operators whose terms we compared.
What should a solo diver ask about buddies and guides?
Ask about your own departure, because crew and guest numbers vary by boat. Conditions make this more than a formality: our season guide explains how quickly current can change a dive, and White Manta's own rating for one North Sulawesi trip starts at Intermediate. You want to know who is next to you when the water turns.
- Who will I dive with: an assigned buddy, a guide, or a group?
- How many divers does each guide lead on this sailing?
- Do you pair by experience, and can I ask for a change if the pairing is not working?
- If guests are an odd number, what happens to the guest left over?
- If I take photographs and move slowly, can you pair me with someone at the same pace?
The standing requirements apply to you as to everyone. White Manta will want your dive and travel insurance and a dive computer, and La Galigo wants a recognised certification from an agency such as PADI or SSI. Nothing in those terms singles out solo travellers. The broader checklist is in how to choose a Sulawesi liveaboard, which works just as well for an offer from us as for anyone else's, given the interest we declare.
What else changes the total for one guest?
Less than you might fear on per-person items, more on shared ones. Fuel and park charges are quoted per person, so being alone should not raise them, unless an operator applies its percentage to them, which is the question in the first table row. The costs that bite are the ones normally split between two people. Ask whether a transfer is priced per car or per person, since we have seen no published Manado to Bitung price. Add any hotel night before boarding, and remember that you carry it alone.
Then check whether a solo guest is treated differently on tips, onboard purchases or course fees. We have seen no sign that any operator does, but it takes one line in an email to rule it out, and it finishes the picture of what one person actually pays.
Which published prices did we check?
Published fares, marketplace ranges and operator add-ons, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our offers. Fares and fees change, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
| Item | Published price | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mermaid I, Lembeh, Togian, Lembeh, 12 days 11 nights, 16 to 27 Feb 2027, lower deck to single (published fare, excludes fuel surcharge) | €5,500 lower deck; €6,000 deluxe; €6,600 master; €7,500 single, per person | mermaid-liveaboards.com | Nov 2026 |
| King Neptune, Bau-Bau round trip, 8 nights, May and Sep 2028 (published fare) | US$6,200 shared; US$4,100 single cabin, per person | neptuneliveaboards.com | Nov 2026 |
| Oceanic Society, supplement for upgrades and limited single cabins on that expedition (published) | US$5,995 | oceanicsociety.org | Nov 2026 |
What do readers also ask about travelling solo?
Do Sulawesi liveaboards charge a single supplement?
Yes on White Manta, Mermaid and Oceanic Society; Neptune's published figures do not show a supplement. The method differs: a percentage, a separate single fare, or a flat amount. Other boats may differ, so ask how yours prices a solo guest.
How much does a single cabin cost?
It depends on the boat and the method. White Manta's rule is a 20% addition, and this page's price table carries the Mermaid, Neptune and Oceanic Society figures, each for one named trip.
Can I avoid the supplement by sharing?
Possibly. No pairing rule is published that we can show, so ask whether they will match you, and what you pay if no one else books.
Are there rules for solo travellers?
None that these operators publish. The usual requirements still apply, such as the insurance and dive computer White Manta insists on, and the recognised certification La Galigo asks for.
Does the supplement apply to fuel and park charges?
The page does not say. White Manta's page states a 20% addition for single occupancy, so ask whether that applies to the fare alone or to the other charges as well.
