Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Published fares are not our offers, and fees change.

Comparing liveaboard cost in Sulawesi and Raja Ampat, with Komodo alongside, works best on one marketplace, and the price table on this page does that using LiveAboard.com's per-trip ranges. The ranges overlap so much that they cannot show which region costs less. Only the same cabin class and trip length on named departures can.

What does one marketplace show for each region?

It shows three wide per-trip ranges, one per region, from the same site and checked in the same month. We use LiveAboard.com's Sulawesi, Raja Ampat and Komodo pages for every row, because mixing sources would add differences that have nothing to do with the regions. The amounts sit in this page's price table. Four things stand out when you read them together:

  • The Sulawesi range sits entirely inside both of the others.
  • Sulawesi and Raja Ampat share the same lower figure.
  • Raja Ampat and Komodo share the same upper figure.
  • Komodo has the lowest entry point of the three.

It would be tempting to treat these as a ranking, and they do not support one. A range is two listings, the lowest and the highest, on a page where the trips between them may differ in length, cabin and season. A narrower range for Sulawesi may simply mean fewer very long trips are listed there. Komodo's low entry point may reflect a short trip or a small cabin. The listing pages alone do not settle it, so we draw no conclusion about which region costs less.

Why do the ranges overlap?

We cannot prove why from the listing pages. A plausible reason is that trip length and cabin move the price, and that one long trip crosses more than one region and appears on each region's page. Published routes make that easy to imagine:

  • White Manta lists Raja Ampat, Halmahera and Lembeh crossings of 10, 11 and 12 days, ending at Tandurusa Port in Bitung.
  • Wallacea Dive Cruise lists a 12-day, 11-night trip from Sorong to Bitung on 15 May 2028.
  • Cruising Indonesia describes the Sorong to North Sulawesi crossing as a 700 nautical mile journey.
  • Neptune's guide says the better North Sulawesi crossings string Bunaken, Bangka and Lembeh together with Halmahera before heading south toward Sorong.

A trip like those belongs to both Sulawesi and Raja Ampat, so a region's range may contain a fare that was shaped by another region's water and distance. If so, a listed range says little about one boat on a different route. A boat's fare on a long crossing is likely to carry the nights, fuel and logistics of that crossing. Its fare on a short route in one region carries something else, even with the same crew and cabins. Comparing the top of one range with the bottom of another may therefore compare a voyage with a short break.

Do extras differ by region?

They differ by operator and by route, and that much we can show. Whether they differ systematically by region is unproven, because no like-for-like set of extras for Raja Ampat or Komodo trips is available to compare. Please do not assume that the extras on your Sulawesi quote will carry over.

The clearest evidence comes from a single boat. LiveAboard.com's listing for La Galigo gives required park and port fees as a span across all that boat's routes, which means the same vessel's extras change with where it goes. Within Sulawesi alone the guide to what a fare includes and leaves out shows operators billing the same kinds of cost in different ways. So when you compare regions, get each trip's extras from its own operator and add them yourself. These lines usually decide the outcome:

Do extras differ by region?
Line to checkWhat can change between regions or routes
Park and port feesVary by route even on one boat's listing
Fuel surchargeMay depend on trip length; long crossings deserve a direct question
Flights and transfersDifferent gateways, and a one-way crossing means two different airports
Hotel nightsDepend on flight timing at each port

Which comparison is actually useful?

The useful one sets two named departures against each other after you have made them match. That takes some effort, but anything less compares the shape of a web page. In order of usefulness:

  1. One boat on two routes. Hold the crew, cabin and operator constant, then see how the fare moves. This removes most of the noise, where an operator publishes both.
  2. Two boats with the same nights and cabin class. Compare cabin sizes as well as names, for the same season if possible.
  3. Per-night figures after extras. Add fuel, fees and any nitrox you will use, then divide by nights.
  4. Total trip cost including flights. For a traveller, this is the real figure, although no dated airfare appears here to help with it.
  5. Marketplace ranges. Useful only for seeing that a market has a wide spread. Stop there.

Then ask what you are buying. Lembeh's muck diving is one kind of trip and a week in Raja Ampat or Komodo is another, and a fare comparison will not tell you which one you want. Decide what you want to see first, and then price that. For the Sulawesi side, published fares by route sets out the operator rows that sit beneath this marketplace range. If you start from the marketplace, open each trip's own page and use the fare it shows for your dates.

Timing also matters. A comparison made today can be overturned by a new season's fares, since marketplaces change what they list and operators reprice. The guide to when to go covers Sulawesi's seasons, and those will shape which of your two departures is worth comparing in the first place.

What else do readers ask about comparing regions?

Is Sulawesi lower priced than Raja Ampat?

We cannot say from these ranges. The Sulawesi range sits inside the Raja Ampat one, which does not show that a matching trip costs less. Compare two named departures with the same nights and cabin class before drawing any conclusion.

Why does Komodo show such a wide range?

The listing page does not say. A range only reports its lowest and highest listed trips, and those can differ greatly in length, cabin and season. Open the trips at each end to see what they are.

Are the same extras charged in Raja Ampat and Komodo?

Do not assume so. Extras are set by operator and route, and one boat's listing shows park and port fees varying across its own routes. Get the list for each trip from its operator.

Can I compare these regions per night?

Yes, once you have named trips. A per-night sum needs a real fare, its nights and its extras, and a marketplace range supplies none of those. Keep the cabin class and the season the same.

Which published prices did we check?

Published fares, marketplace ranges and operator add-ons, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our offers. Fares and fees change, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
